Taste Profile and Commercial Grade

Our Orchards Legacy chestnuts are described as having a rich, nutty, and slightly sweet flavor that can become sweeter after curing. The taste can be more sweet than other varieties, while retaining a satisfying nuttiness. When roasted, they develop an earthy, slightly sweet taste due to the concentration of natural sugars.  Chestnut production relies on the genetics of each tree, and chestnut quality standards can range from regular grade to premium grade retail food standards.

Health Benefits

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, chestnuts are considered a warming food that nourishes the qi of the kidneys, spleen and digestive system.  Chestnuts contain antioxidants and fiber that help protect the heart and aid digestions. They are also excellent sources of manganese, vitamin C and B vitamins.

These nutrients give chestnuts the power to support bone health, improve brain function and boost the immune system.  Research also suggests that chestnut extract has a positive effect on the strain of beneficial probiotics that are found in the gastrointestinal tract. This can help improve gut health.

Consumption Warning

These chestnuts are safe for human consumption.   While chestnuts are often called nuts, they are not part of the tree nut family and are botanically different from peanuts, walnuts, or almonds. People with tree nut allergies can usually tolerate chestnuts. However, some individuals may be allergic to chestnuts despite not having a tree nut allergy. In these cases, the allergen is likely a lipid transfer protein.
